North Kesteven District Council have an ongoing programme entitled Wellsprings and Waterways through which artists are commissioned to produce artworks which celebrate the role water has played in the formation of the landscape and local communities.
This 10 metre tall steel sculpture for Sleaford stands in the River Slea and draws its inspiration from the role the river has played in the history of the town. It celebrates the sailing barges that once unloaded their wares at Navigation Wharf and makes reference to the fact that these barges had an unusual rigging system which allowed them to lower their masts to pass under bridges.
The commission for the sculpture resulted from the partnership between Sleaford and District Civic Trust and North Kesteven District Council. It has been funded by Sleaford and District Civic Trust, private subscription and Arts Council funding awarded to the District Council for developing the arts in North Kesteven.
The sculpture and supporting framework, all from stainless steel, developed in partnership with Aerotrope, have been designed to be movable so that the sculpture can be repositioned should the river ever become navigable again in the future.
(9m high, stainless steel)
