Peter Hiles Memorial (2002)

Client: Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton

This was a memorial piece for Peter Hiles, the man who led the commissioning team responsible for developing The Millennium Wing at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. Incorporated within the design are some of the interests and passions of the man. A miniature version was cast in silver and presented to his widow as a broach.

Wallpiece dedicated to Peter's memory



The Level 6 courtyard at the Royal Sussex County Hospital now bears a memorial to a former colleague, Peter Hiles.



Peter, who died at home last year as a result of a brain tumour, led the commissioning team responsible for developing the Millennium Wing at the hospital. He joined the Trust eight years ago in the very early stages of planning the redevelopment.



Colleagues gathered in the courtyard for a simple ceremony to dedicate the memorial wallpiece.



The sculpture by local artist William Lasdun embodies symbolic images of some of Peter's passions and interests - the two magnificent Shire horses he owned, his love of the Sussex countryside and his enjoyment of cricket and rugby.



Stuart Welling and William Lasdun both spoke movingly about their friendship with Peter.



Stuart said: "I spent many months looking for the right person to lead the development and as soon as I met Peter I knew I had found that person. Phase I is testament to the contribution Peter made to the trust".



William recalled a visit to his studio by Peter to commission another work, the statue of Isis, which sits in the same courtyard.



Peter's widow Jacqueline said: "When I stand here in the courtyard I remember Peter as he was".



Senior chaplain Rev. Richard Adfield led the prayer of dedication at the conclusion of the ceremony.
