Courtyard Design (1999)
Client: Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton

The courtyard design originated from a brief to enliven what was going to be a rather bland space once major new building works had been completed. The project involved working closely with the architects and structural engineers and developing a scheme around the various constraints of work in a public hospital. I was asked to produce a design which would present a relaxing and calming place for patients and staff to sit in and give the courtyard some kind of orientation.
The design of the paving forms a processional route to the statue of Isis and helps to orientate it within the courtyard. The design echoes the wing form on the back of the sculpture and also makes reference to the river Nile along which Isis travelled, and in so doing, makes a gesture towards the sea at Brighton.
